the successful implementation of Shuraako's activities by identifying and
developing investment opportunities, assessing and monitoring investment
portfolios, strengthening stakeholder relationships, and ensuring effective
portfolio management. The role involves identifying investment opportunities
among existing and prospective businesses that are currently, or are expected
to become, investment-ready based on their commercial viability, profitability,
growth potential, scalability, job creation, and long-term sustainability. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, self-motivated, and
possess excellent written and oral communication skills in English. A solid
understanding of the private sector landscape in the Somali region is
essential. Reports to: Associate Director, Investments Job Type: Full-Time. The Investment Manager will work 45 hours per week. Primary Responsibilities:
- Be the “on-the-ground” eyes, ears, and voice for Shuraako Capital.
- Promote Shuraako Capital: by building relationships with the
business community, business associations, civil society, and government (e.g.
“Chamber of Commerce”).
- Investment assessment: Evaluate prospective businesses through
business plan reviews, financial analysis, financial modeling, market research,
reference checks, and due diligence.
- Credit & risk assessment: Assess the financial and
creditworthiness of business owners, shareholders, and management, while
identifying potential investment and portfolio risks.
- Verifying the financing purpose: confirming that the requested
financing is for an eligible underlying asset or business need.
- Conducting due diligence: reviewing business registration,
licenses, contracts, references, collateral/security where applicable, and
other supporting documents.
- Investment proposals: Prepare investment appraisals and present
investment opportunities to management and investment committees for approval.
- Portfolio management: Monitor investee businesses, including
collection of loan repayments, managing default clients, reporting
requirements, compliance with Murabaha and technical agreements, supporting
Murabaha agreement underwriting and overall portfolio performance.
- Monitoring portfolio targets: Prepare and maintain regular
portfolio reports covering repayment collections targets and portfolio
repayment performance, investment pipeline, prospective clients, and emerging
risks to support management decision-making.
- Business development: Identify operational and governance gaps and
recommend actions to improve business processes, internal controls, management
capacity, and organizational structures.
- Environmental & social compliance: Support E&S assessments,
compliance monitoring, and implementation of relevant action plans.
- Client support: Maintain regular communication with clients, help
resolve business challenges, and support timely submission of progress and
monitoring reports.
- Market intelligence: Conduct field visits and gather information on
market conditions, private-sector challenges, investment opportunities, and
sector trends.
- Representation: Represent Shuraako Capital in the field and build
relationships with businesses, government institutions, business associations,
NGOs, and other stakeholders.
- Problem Solving: Problem-solve with current and/or potential
Shuraako Capital clients and fund partners to ensure the successful
implementation of Shuraako Capital activities and our objectives.
- Stakeholder & organizational support: Coordinate with regional
and international Shuraako Capital’s teams, donors, partners, government institutions,
and other organizations, including supporting events and visiting staff.
- Government Regulatory Compliance: Prepare and follow-up on yearly
registration documents with relevant government Ministries and the Central
Bank.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with Shuraako Capital, OEF, and
regulatory requirements.
- Team contribution: Participate in team meetings, strategic
planning, other team activities and activities assigned by management.
- Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by management to support
the successful implementation of Shuraako Capital’s activities and objectives.
Skills and qualifications
- Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Competences:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, Investment Banking,
Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in investment banking,
finance, or a related field, with strong experience in financial analysis,
business analysis, and financial modeling.
- Technical skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365,
particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with strong general computer skills.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in
English and Somali, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients,
partners, and senior stakeholders.
- Organization & time management: Strong attention to detail,
ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in
a fast-paced environment.
- Interpersonal & stakeholder management: Strong
relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with clients,
partners, vendors, colleagues, government institutions, and other stakeholders
at different levels.
- Professionalism: Ability to maintain confidentiality, handle
sensitive information, represent the organization positively, and maintain a
flexible and professional approach.
- Teamwork & adaptability: Ability to work independently and
collaboratively in a dynamic and culturally diverse environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in a relevant field.
- Experience in the banking/financial services and non-profit
industry.
- Experience Islamic Finance
- Understanding of SME environment, context and business financial
modelling
- Fluency in English and Somali.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Physical Work Demands:
- Able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
- Able to bend at the waist and reach on a daily basis.
- Able to lift and move up to 25 lbs regularly.
