Background
ODAWO
(Observatory Development and Welfare Organization) is a national,
non-governmental, and non-profit organization established in 2007 in Odweine,
Somaliland. Operating across all six regions of Somaliland, ODAWO focuses on
environmental protection, food security and agriculture, WASH, protection, and
education.
Purpose of the Role
The Agriculture Officer will provide technical expertise and field-level coordination to ensure effective planning, implementation, and monitoring of agricultural intervention Programmes. The role focuses on improving agricultural production and productivity, soil health, and climate resilience through community-driven and sustainable practices.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Mobilization
and sensitization of communities to participate in livelihoods, resilient and
agriculture activities.
- Participate in verification of
beneficiary lists to ensure that those registered are eligible and suitable for
the agriculture projects.
- Promote contribution and active
participation of targeted beneficiary communities in the project work.
- Provide climate smart agriculture
expertise in the planning and execution of agricultural interventions (e.g.,
climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, irrigation management).
- Train and mentor farmers, lead
farmers, groups, cooperatives and community agricultural extension workers on
improved crop production and productivity, soil fertility management, and
sustainable farming practices.
- Support the introduction and
adaptation of improved seed varieties, organic manures and organic soil
management practices suitable to local conditions.
- Design and oversee demonstration
plots and model farms to promote learning and replication of best practices.
- Develop training materials and
conduct farmer field schools/group learning, workshops, and community extension
sessions.
- Conduct regular field monitoring to
assess crop performance, identify pest and disease outbreaks, and recommend
corrective actions.
- Collect, analyze, and document
agronomic data (e.g., crop yields, soil conditions, rainfall patterns, pest
trends).
- Track the project progress, to
measure production and productivity by individual farmers, farmer groups,
cooperatives and document them.
- Support mainstreaming of
cross-cutting issues into all aspects of Agricultural activities
- Lead in facilitating the training
and training of Farmers Association (cooperatives).
- Lead in conducting agri-business
training (Farming as a business) and farming beneficiaries
- Facilitate capacity building of
community-based extension workers.
- Participate in surveys/assessments,
and support ODAWO’s program activities in the field if required and provide
necessary operational support and guidance to value chain groups
- Report on key relevant observations
(positive and negative) to Concern management
- Prepare and produce quality and
timely weekly, monthly and activity reports
- Collaborate with local agricultural
offices, government extension agents, and development partners for harmonized
implementation.
- Prepare and submit regular technical
reports, field visit summaries, and case studies or success stories.
- Contribute donor reports, project
reviews, and learning documentation.
- Maintain accurate records of
training activities, beneficiaries, and field outcomes.
- Represent ODAWO in relevant
coordination and technical cluster meetings.
- Facilitate communication between project teams, communities, and partners to ensure smooth coordination.
- Support the research, documentation,
and sharing of lessons learned and best practices.
Skills and qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in agriculture,
Agricultural Economics or Veterinary is preferred.
- 1-2 years’ experience in similar role
- Good verbal and written
communication skills in English and Somali.
- Knowledge in the use of MS Windows
and MS Office programs.
- Maintains constant neutrality and

- Strong interpersonal skills, and
enthusiasm about improving the lives of the most poor and vulnerable people.

- Strong technical knowledge in
agronomy, irrigation, and conservation agriculture.

- Ability to analyze field data and

- Fluency in Somali and good
working knowledge of English.
