Overview:
The
Edna Adan Hospital has long been devoted to the education and development of
health care professionals in Somaliland. When Edna Adan Ismail returned to her
native Somaliland after a career with the World Health Organization, she found
a grave health situation endangering the lives of many women and children. As
the result of Somaliland’s thirty-year struggle for independence from Somalia,
much of the Hargeisa infrastructure was in ruins and the majority of trained
professionals who had previously staffed the health and educational services
were gone.
As
Edna started to build her hospital, she also opened the Edna Adan Nursing and
Midwifery School, the first institution to re-start training health workers in
2000. Since that time, many midwives, nurses, and anaesthetists have been
trained.
Based
on the success of these programs and to meet the demand for skilled medical
workers in the Horn of Africa region, it was determined that a university with
a full degree program should be developed. The Edna Adan University (EAU) was
established in 2010 and admitted its first class of 27 juniors, mostly
recruited from the post-basic midwifery curriculum. In affiliation with the
University of Hargeisa, funded by the Department for International Development
(DFID) and implemented by the Tropical Health Education Trust(THET), the degree
program opened with just one full time faculty member.
The
university has continued to expand its degree programs and establish new
faculties. The current faculties include: Nursing, Midwifery, Medicine &
Surgery, Medical Laboratory, Pharmacology, Anesthesia, Dental Technology,
Public Health and Veterinary Medicine.
Edna
Adan Ismail remains involved in the university as its Chancellor. In 2014,
Professor Mohamed Hussein Osman became president and has been working to expand
the university, including the construction of a new three-story university
building, the establishment of a new e-Library and a printing press for
printing text books and other materials. The new university building will open
in 2017 and Bachelor degrees and diplomas in additional disciplines will be
opened for study.
